Tables to Divs
3-Column layouts don't always have to be table based. I had a client who purchased one of the older Project Seven Design Packs, and wanted to update it to load a little quicker and be more standards based.
Take a gander at this Project Seven mod (not sure they're selling this particular DP anymore) I did for RobinChang.com. All of the tables were stripped out and redone with a clean, full <div> layout. I was able to keep the PVII effects intact and it's nearly impossible to tell the difference between this and their original tabular form. And, it validates as XHTML 1.0 Transitional of course.

very nice. A few oddities in mozilla, like the right column text being longer than that col's bgcolor when you have a wide screen. I'd also work on suits.gif. It looks like it needs some anti-aliasing. Personally I would use the brown color behind the people and convert it to a jpg rather than trying to have that internal background be transparent. You can do a smoother alias that way.Daniel Short wrote on 06/25/03 8:19 AM
Hey man, I'm a coder... I don't deal with shades of brown and stuff...... I'll have to mess with Moz a bit, but it's a niche browser still :)Robin Chang wrote on 06/26/03 5:25 AM
What is Mozilla? Sounds like a dinosaur. :) Whatever it is, we're very happy with the work, Dan, as always. Thanks for everything. RC~Angela wrote on 07/02/03 5:27 PM
So, you design a table-less site and take a week off from the blog? What a slacker ;-)Daniel Short wrote on 07/02/03 5:27 PM
Someone's gotta take a week off from my blog :)~Angela wrote on 07/02/03 10:38 PM

Looks impressive! Amazing re-working of the Project Seven code bloat. The original version of the Pack you did can be found here: http://www.projectseven.com/dpdemos/dp11/ I'm a fan of their Design packs, but really like what you did here. E.L.
