Netflix is my friend

For the longest time I kind of looked down my nose at Netflix, didn't really know why, just seemed like a goofy idea to me. Well I finally decided I'd try out their 2 week trial membership, and I must say I'm duly impressed. Here's a quick timeline for you:

  1. I signed up for my trial subscription on Saturday night.
  2. Monday morning, I received 3 movies from my queue, Underworld, The Order and Reservoir Dogs.
  3. Monday night I watched Underworld (bad story, but visually appealing).
  4. Teusday Morning I put Underworld back in it's pre-stamped ready-to-go envelope, and stuck it in the mail to Netflix.
  5. I got an email Wednesday morning that they'd recevied Underworld, and would send out a new movie to me by Friday.
  6. I got an email Wednesday afternoon that they were sending Road to Perdition.
  7. Thursday afternoon I checked my mail and there was Road to Perdition, in that little nifty red envelope.

Call me a geek, but I would love to see how they manage all of the ins and outs of delivery so many movie so quickly. If I wanted to I could watch a new movie every single day (they allow you 3 out at a time). I've got about 80 different movies in my queue at this point, and I'm sure I'll keep them well past the 2 week trial.

Netflix rocks! I've been using them for over a year now. Indeed, they have several shipment hubs to service their customers throughout the USA: Netflix - About Us. I've never had to wait over 3 business days for delivery. It's great. Netflix really is the best. They have the latest selections, plus tons of items you'll never find at Blockbuster (documentaries, music videos, classics, etc). They're public now, and doing really well (NASDAQ: NFLX), plus the media/techies love them. If you like 'em, I recommend upgrading your account to have more DVD's. I recently bumped up into the 8 DVD range and it only costs $39.95 a month. BTW, have you seen the commercials for GameFly on TechTV? Looks like a cool deal -- same concept as Netflix but with video games. I may give them a try.

Yes, it do indeed rock :). I looked at the return address on my envelopes, and they go back to Salem (just 45 minutes south of here), that would certainly explain the quick turnaround. As far as GameFly goes? I'm not even gonna look at their site, or I'll never get any work done :).

Yeah, well just wait till you've been a customer for a while. If you turn around your discs quickly, you're costing Netflix money. One day you'll go to your queue and find--as I did--that every one of your movies (85 in my case) are labeled "Very long wait."

Well that ain't good... maybe I'll have to spread 'em out a little more... :). Thanks for the tip.

Dan - I don't know why it took so long for you to get the return disc. Maybe because you were still in trial mode, but I can send a disc in Tuesday and get the new on Wednesday. You must not have my mail man!
