The Grapes of Wrath
Yes, I know it's punny, but I couldn't help it!!! I spent all day Saturday at Amity Vineyards picking grapes. Yep... picking grapes. Amity Vineyards has a Harvest Party every year where poor suckers like us get to go see what it's like to work in a vineyard, and I'll tell you, it's damn hard work. I believe we picked a grand total of 10 tons of grapes off of 3 acres, which Myron Redford will use to make Pinot Noir and other tasty wines.
So why did I pick so many grapes that I still have a hard time making it down the stairs two days later? Because you get wine at employee prices (after all, I was an employee for a day) and if you come back the following year you get a free bottle make from the grapes you broke your back picking. Not only that, but Myron's wife makes a fantastic dinner, and all the wine you can drink is free. Needless to say I'm glad I wasn't driving home, because I was fat, happy, and thoroughly inebriated on some of the best reds I've had in a long time. I brought home 8 bottles, and I ain't sharin....

And here I was gonna bring the really good wine to New Orleans... I'll have to rethink that one. And take it easy on the caffeine there dad :).Dad wrote on 10/20/04 4:08 AM
Momma says if you don't bring the good stuff to New Orleans, she will be downloading certain INFO to a certain person that will be there. You might want to think long and hard on this decision. And yes this is called extortion. But that is legal when you do it to your kids!:)HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I love DR. Pepper caffiene!!!! Luv ya, DADDaniel Short wrote on 10/20/04 4:08 AM

Ya'll are sounding a little toooo much alike, I hoped that the insanity could have skipped a gerneration or that your mom could have a little influence. I mean after all how scared are you really?!? I think she has a lot of something to have lived through the three of ya'll!!!! Love ya though, becuase you do keep things interesting!!!Daniel Short wrote on 10/22/04 10:32 AM
Well she'd have to be able to put the fear in dad in order to keep him in line. You of all people should know that, I mean you had to live with him through puberty... how scary was *THAT*!Dad wrote on 10/23/04 5:13 AM
I LEARNED IT FROM MY SISTER!!! I LEARNED IT FROM MY SISTER!!! BOOO HOOO! Momma, she hit me 32 years ago!! It still hurts!! BOO HOO!!!Daniel Short wrote on 10/23/04 5:13 AM
I have a feeling I'm going to have to separate you two...brenda wrote on 10/24/04 8:42 AM
Still tattling I see!!! At least I taught you something!! Although I'm not sure what, I think that your wife had more influence than I ever did. Which is a very good thing!! After all she is still putting up with you after all these years, what patience the woman must have!! Then to add two sons to the mix, WOW. See Dan we can still argue from miles away and get you involved too!! That's what makes it fun!! Love ya, B.Daniel Short wrote on 10/24/04 8:43 AM

Having spent a half day gleaning gewurtz Oct 14 at Amity, I can sympathize - gleaning is even worse than straight picking - trying to grab the little left-behind, half-hidden clusters from up under wires and leaves is just a bitch. But even though pinot was our goal, we took what we got for the free price, and came home, stomped and yeasted. We had planned to go help Myron, too, but "real" work kept us at bay. Still, we will get some wine and a share of the on-going passion for wine and it's creation. Your comments, found in a relatively unrelated Google search, gave that feeling of the camaraderie of grapes. Fun.Daniel Short wrote on 10/28/04 9:39 AM
Thanks for the note Thea, and I'll remember to avoid the gleaning ;).Cornel wrote on 11/06/04 10:44 AM

So glad you could join us! It is always a hard day's work but oh so worth it in the end. I think I was a bit tipsy on our drive home! :-) Snaps to Brent for driving us home! Now if Brent & I can just keep our hands off the 4 cases we bought for our wedding next summer. EEEK - that is going to be tough since its so tasty!
